The island of Kythera, also known as Kithira or Cerigo, as it was called by the Venetians, is a large (278 square kilometers) Greek island lying south of the Peloponnesus and north of Crete. About 27 nautical miles to the south lies its small pendant, the rocky island of Antikythera
or Cerigotto. Confusingly for many visitors, both islands are historically and culturally part of the Ionian Islands, even though they lie far to the south of the main group; to add to the confusion, both belong administratively to the Department of Attica.
